Doctor's medical license revoked because of back child support

When Florida parents split, one issue that comes up is child support. Typically, one parent will take primary custody of the child, while the other parent will have to pay child support. Normally this arrangement works well. One parent will take care of the kid, the other parent will make their payments on time. But sometimes it does not work.

Take, for example, a doctor behind on his child support. According to authorities, the doctor owed more than $20,000 in child support. That is a lot of money. In fact, it was so much that the state got involved by revoking the doctor's medical license. As a result, the doctor will not be able to practice medicine until he either pays in full or works out a payment plan.

The doctor's situation raises an important issue for Florida parents who owed child support payments. When a noncustodial parent gets behind, the custodial parent can go to the court that issued the child support order. The court has several options for enforcing the order. One of the most common is to garnish wages from the noncustodial parent's paycheck. Another is to intercept the parent's tax refund - especially relevant as we reach tax day this April 15th. Yet another is to place a lien on the noncustodial parent's property. In other words, the noncustodial parent will not be able to sell the property without also paying the government from the sale's proceeds.

When those approaches do not work, consequences can escalate. This can include, as the doctor can attest, suspension or revocation of a license. But it can go further still. When nothing else works, a noncustodial parent can be sent to jail.
