Florida politician's dispute with wife ends in annulment

A divorce in Florida can be a difficult process under any circumstances, whether it is a prominent couple or not. With divorce litigation, there is often child support to hash out, the splitting of assets, and even a rancorous disagreement as to the circumstances that led to the parting of the ways. Public divorces and back and forth allegations make the process even tougher than conventional divorces.

The marriage of U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, Democrat of Florida, was annulled after 25 years. Rep. Grayson and his wife Lolita received the decision that the marriage was not legal as Mrs. Grayson was married to another man when she married Grayson in 1990. A divorce petition from Mrs. Grayson was dismissed, but other matters are still up for litigation. The decision to annul the marriage was made by the couple in April after they had engaged in an extended dispute. The couple has four children between the ages of 10 and 16. Rep. Grayson requested custody. His former wife wanted joint custody as well as child support. Since Rep. Grayson is wealthy with assets totaling approximately $30 million, this was also a high-asset divorce before it was settled with an annulment.

There are many different ways for a divorce proceeding to go. There can be a long-term and contentious dispute between the parties as they fight over everything. It can be a relatively amicable parting of the ways with the best interests of everyone in mind and the desire to simply get it over with and move on. Unfortunately, the latter types are a rarity. Regardless of the case, each side wants to have a fair distribution of the assets and reasonable agreement regarding children, if there are any. With that in mind, it is key to have a grasp of the legal issues at hand.

In the case of Rep. Grayson and his wife, the case was made more difficult by the allegation that Mrs. Grayson had been married to another man at the time she married Rep. Grayson. Added in are the children and the vast assets the couple had accrued.

Of course, this is a highly unusual case in many ways. Still, every divorce has the potential to get complicated. It can be crucial to have the help of an experienced Florida attorney.
